FAQ

1. Types of ELT

a) What is an Automatic ELT ?
It is an Emergency Locator Transmitter equipped with an acceleration sensor (G-switch), which will automatically activate the ELT emission when a certain acceleration is applied to the unit.
There are two types of automatic ELT: Automatic Fixed and Automatic Portable.
Note : A Survival ELT "automatically" activated when placed into water based liquid is not considered to be an "Automatic ELT".

    > What is an Automatic Fixed ELT (AF) ?
This type of ELT is “An automatically activated ELT which is permanently attached to an aircraft”

    > What is an Automatic Portable ELT (AP) ?
This type of Emergency Locator Transmitter is “An automatically activated ELT which is rigidly attached to an aircraft but readily removable from the aircraft"

    b) What is a Survival ELT (S) ?
This type of Emergency Locator Transmitter is “An ELT which is removable from an aircraft, stowed so as to facilitate its ready use in an emergency, and manually activated by survivors.”
Note : "An Automatic Portable ELT, (ELT(AP)), as installed in accordance with JAR-OPS 1.820, may be used to replace one ELT(S) provided that it meets the ELT(S) requirements. A water activated ELT(S) is not an ELT(AP)."

2. ELT Coding

    a. How to encode my ELT ?
Authorised coding methods (protocols) are managed by your local authority. Please contact them.
Definition of coding methods can be found on Cospas-Sarsat website.
    http://www.cospas-sarsat.org/Beacons/codingGuideContent.htm
Although any protocol can be used with ELTA ELT, we recommend the aircraft registration protocol when the local authority does not require a specific protocol.

    b. Is coding included in the price of my ELT ?
Yes, ELTA encodes all ELT prior to shipment against the receipt of appropriate coding form.
    > Coding information

    c. In which country should I register my ELT ?
The country code of the ELT should always reflect the country in which the final operator is based.
For instance, the ELT on an aircraft operated by an airline in Italy, leased from a US company, that has the aircraft registered in Ireland, should have the country code of Italy.

    d. Who is responsible for the final ELT registration ?
The operator must register each ELT to its local authority.
ELTA will provide appropriate form together with the ELT to facilitate the registration process.

    e. How do I recode my ELT ?
    ELT can be recoded:
    i. by ELTA or by one of ELTA’s approved service centers
ii. by operator by using ELTA encoder tool
iii. by operator by using ELTA test bench (STB-06 or BTS 96 series)

Nota : For ELT A06V2, both ELT P/N 95N6088 and bracket/prog box P/N 95N6089 must be returned to ELTA/service center as the coding is stored in the bracket/prog box. > 06B60185 ELT RETURN

    f. How to decode the official Cospas-Sarsat 15 HEX Code identification ?
    http://www.cospas-sarsat.org/Beacons/decode.htm
This link will help you retrieving the detailed fields of the identification.
